The Shepherd's Corner

[:en]THE SHEPHERD’S CORNER

One of the ministers that God has used to serve in US Senate was Peter Marshall, a Scot by origin. Once when he was in England, he was walking, taking a shortcut in an area where there was a deep deserted limestone quarry. The problem is, he couldn’t see it because it was pitch-dark. As he was plodding slowly he suddenly heard a voice calling out, “Peter!” So, he stopped and answered, “Yes, who it is? What do you want?” But, he heard no response.

Peter then took a few more steps, thinking that he was mistaken. The voice came again, this time calling with urgency, “Peter!” He stopped again, and when he was trying to peer into the darkness, he fell to his knees. When he wanted to get up, he put down his hand in front of him and it was then he discovered, there was nothing there—a complete hollow. He was right on the brink of a deep and abandoned quarry! Had he taken another step, he’d have fallen into it, and perhaps killed himself.

I cannot tell you how many times God called out my name and warned me of the danger ahead. Of course, I am not talking about physical danger but rather spiritual danger. When God sees that we’re walking to a spiritual cliff, He will call out our names. He does not want us to plunge into a quarry of sin; for that, at times He will make us stumble and fall. He loves us too much to allow that to happen, and because He loves, He’d rather see us hurt, than cut.

But, sometimes we ignore His voice; we keep walking and finally fall into sin—deep sin. When that happens, it’s time for us to call out His name. He’ll hear us and reach down; He will not say, “I told you so.” As Corrie ten Boom says, “There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.” His love can reach us, wherever we are.
