I do not know exactly how many came to the memorial service to pay their last respect to Pastor John but there were many! Even the viewing line itself took more than an hour to end. Even the viewing line itself took more than an hour to end. And, on Monday there were again so many people who came to commit Pastor John to his final resting place. There are so many people whose lives have been touched by this simple and faithful man of God. I am certain that every body has a story to tell about how Oom John had in his unique but loving way touched their lives. Every body has a good and memorable story to tell about this gentle servant of the Lord.

Our church is not the same without him. Every Sunday he came fully dressed with suit and tie and more often than not, in matching color with that of Tante Barbara’s dress. He would walk around greeting every body with his warm welcome—making every one of us feel so special and cared for.

Pastor John has finished the race and he finished it well. He started and finished well because he started by God’s grace and ended it by God’s grace. He started with humility and ended it with humility. He started with forgiveness and ended it with forgiveness. He started with love and ended it with love. He started as a servant of the Lord and finished as a servant of the Lord.

There is much to learn from this man of God. One of them is that he did not change over the years. The wealthy and the poor, the educated and the uneducated, the strong and the weak, all received the same treatment from him. He was a friend to them all. He was an extension of God’s love and grace.
