THE SHEPHERD’S CORNER
One act of kindness. That’s all it takes to make a difference. The other day when A-Nyan and I were helping Tante Yuni walk to the hospital entrance, a staff member who happened to see her struggling to walk, went inside and grabbed a wheelchair for her. With his gentle voice he, then, coached her to sit before wheeling her inside. While we were waiting in ER, I happened to bump into him again. With his gentle voice he asked how Tante Yuni was before wishing her well. To me, he was God’s angel sent to us.
Jesus, the Son of God came to the world, not to change a nation or a country. He came to change a person one at a time. As author Gary Thomas says, a changed life is an attractive life—it draws people to Christ. If I may add, I’d also say, a changed life is a powerful life—it affects others in a positive way. What this hospital staff did was beyond helpful, it was powerful. In a world where we could careless about others, he showed the power of love.
There are of course many characteristics of a changed life, one of them is they are not even aware of how they affect others around them. They live their lives solely for God that they do not even know that they are making a difference in the lives of many. They do not deliberately try to live a life pleasing to God; they just do—naturally. It is others who see and feel the differences they make.
Christmas is the time of the year when we talk about Christ’s birth, not only in Bethlehem, but also in our hearts. So, now is a good time for us to take a look at how we have lived our lives. If Christ has been born into our lives, it then follows that others should be able to see Him in us. The question is, can they? Can they see mercy, love, forgiveness, and gentleness in us? I hope they can.
