Some of you—who are not so young anymore—might still remember Glen Campbell, that legendary country music singer, made famous by hits like, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Rhinestone Cowboy.”  He is now 75-years old and has Alzheimer’s disease.

Recently he came up with a new album and one of the songs in that album that has become his favorite is, “It’s Your Amazing Grace.”  The reason as to why it is one of his favorite songs is because he is truly thankful that life has turned for the better.  You see for years, drug and alcohol took over his life to the point that he was arrested for drunk-driving in 2003.  But, by the grace of God, he was able to free himself from substance dependency and has since lived a clean life.

Over 200 years ago someone by the name of John Newton wrote a song, “Amazing Grace”—a hymn that’s become perhaps the most well-known Christian song outside of Christian circle.  John Newton was a slave trader living in sin.  When he repented, he left behind a life of profanity, gambling, and drinking.  He wrote that song out of full realization that he was a sinner, saved by the grace of God.

We all have a story to tell.  Some are stories that make us proud, but some, embarrassed.  No wonder when asked what his favorite verse in the Bible was, Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa answered, “Romans 5:8.”  But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Christ did not die for us after we turned our lives around.  Christ died for us while we were still FULLY living in sin.  That’s an amazing love, from an amazing God.
