The cross is the fact that Christ has forgiven our sins. Our Lord, Jesus Christ wants us to imitate him to be kind, compassionate to one another, and forgiving each another (Ephesians 4:32).
Jesus asks us to be (forgiven) people who can experience the amazing grace of God. We also need to forgive other people because that would show our obedience to God. It is not easy to forgive. We cannot forgive someone with our own strength. Our effort to forgive should be based on God’s grace on the cross.
C.S. Lewis’s observation was true: “Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely word, until they have something to forgive”. We could not experience the beauty of forgiveness until we do it—we give forgiveness to someone or we accept forgiveness from someone.
We also need to be forgiving people for we don’t want to allow the person that we refuse to forgive and the past event to have a controlling influence on our lives. By being able to forgive, we get freedom and peace—in mind and soul.
Let us follow our Lord Jesus as our model of forgiveness. He is our source of our forgiveness—his grace. He is also our strength in doing and being forgiving people.
