The Shepherd's Corner

THE SHEPHERD’S CORNER

The other day I went grocery shopping at Vons. Before I paid at the cash register, I was asked whether or not I had a Vons’ card. Since I rarely go to Vons—or grocery shopping for that matter—no, I do not have a Vons’ card. Suddenly a man who lined up next to me offered to use his Vons card and before I even said, yes, he already spelled his card number to the cashier. Thanks to this gentleman’s act of kindness I saved $ 3.00.THE SHEPHERD’S CORNER

Suddenly a man who lined up next to me offered to use his Vons card and before I even said, yes, he already spelled his card number to the cashier. Thanks to this gentleman’s act of kindness I saved $ 3.00.

What made this incident more interesting was his response when I thanked him, “It’s OK. After all we are on the same team.” What he meant was that he and I happened to be on Team Customers. His comment further amazed me because he could find something in common in such an unlikely place—a supermarket’s cash register! Never before had I thought that I had something in common with the hundreds of shoppers at a supermarket. But, he was right; we share a lot in common.

Unbeknownst to him, by his act of kindness and words of wisdom he has affected my life. I could only guess that to him it was not a big deal because he does it all the time. That is just who he is. All this reminds me of the words of Jesus Our Lord, “You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16)

On a more personal note this incident served as an answer to my prayer. Around the same time I prayed to God that He would reveal Himself to me. It was just one of those days when I longed for His tangible presence. And, He did. Oswald Chambers says, “God never tells us what He is going to do. He reveals Who He is.”

We will never understand the complete plan of God.  We may not even live long enough to see the good purpose of His plan.  But there is always a plan, and that plan is good. We can read in 1 Samuel 22:3-4 that David went to King of Moab and asked the king to take […]...
